More than a century of ingredient innovation, rooted in family values

Unbar Rothon’s journey began over a century ago in 1921, when ‘Underwood & Barker’ first supplied ingredients under the ‘UNBAR’ name. A pivotal chapter unfolded in 1948, when Felix Rothon acquired the company and relocated its operations to Billericay, Essex — laying the foundation for decades of expertise in ingredient formulation and application across the food industry.

Quality Management System

Our QMS, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), is externally certified by independent third parties.

We are certified to grade AA status on the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety, BRCGS Global Standard Gluten-Free and BSI ISO 9001.

These systems enable us to maximise safety, quality, ethical and commercial standards for our customers. The supply base for Unbar Rothon is managed and reviewed to deliver these important provisions.

We participate in the Valid IT schemes to offer additional external quality assurances for GMO free or illegal dye free status.

Certified Kosher ingredients and Organic ingredients are also available and externally certified by The Kosher Federation or The Soil Association, respectively.

Our engagement with the SEDEX scheme is a demonstration of our commitment to transparent, ethical, and responsible business practices across its supply chain, particularly in areas like labour standards, health and safety, environmental impact, and business integrity.

The Next Generation

In 1976, the company took on its current identity by blending the trusted ‘Unbar’ brand with the Rothon family name. The launch of  World of Spice expanded its reach into the food service sector with premium offerings.

Today, Unbar Rothon is proudly run by the third generation of the family, supported by a committed team spanning Sales, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and New Product Development.
